Your First FIFO Swing: How to Make a Strong First Impression on Site

Starting your first swing is exciting, and it can be a little daunting. New site, new crew, new routine. The good news is that site managers notice good people quickly. One strong first swing can open doors you didn’t expect.

We check in with site after every candidate’s first swing, so we hear exactly what makes someone stand out. Here’s what we’ve learned.

1. Show up ready

Preparation starts before you fly out. Pack properly, double-check your flight and induction details, and make sure your tickets and licences are current and on hand. Arriving organised tells your supervisor you take the role seriously.

2. Take initiative

The feedback we hear most often is simple: they didn’t need to be told twice. If you finish a task, look for the next one. If you’re unsure, ask. Site managers value people who get the job done without needing to be chased.

3. Be part of the crew

Camp life is a team environment. You’ll be working, eating and living alongside the same people for weeks at a time. Be friendly, pull your weight and respect shared spaces. Fitting in well with the crew matters just as much as doing the job.

4. Put safety first, every time

Every site has its own rules and procedures. Follow them, speak up if something doesn’t look right, and never cut corners. A strong safety mindset is one of the fastest ways to earn trust on site.

5. Look after yourself

Long shifts and time away from home take some adjusting to. Get enough sleep, eat well, stay hydrated, and keep in touch with family and friends. Looking after your wellbeing helps you perform at your best.

6. Ask for feedback

Don’t wait until the end of your swing to find out how you’re going. A quick check-in with your supervisor shows you care about doing well and gives you a chance to adjust early.

Good people get noticed

This week we heard from a site manager about one of our candidates, Brittany. After her first swing, she was described as absolutely brilliant: she takes initiative, gets the job done and works really well with the crew. Her site manager already sees leadership potential in her.

That’s what we love about camp life. Work hard, be a good teammate, and opportunities come quickly.
